About Oversized Mouse Pads
Large or extra large mouse pads are ideal for gamers, graphic design professionals and 3D animators, or basically everyone (especially professionals) who spend a great amount of time in front of computers.
It is important for such mouse pads to have a good base (underside) that does not slide around as this will obviously mess up with the mouse action. Next, it is also very important to have a good, flat and level surface that provides good grip or that works well with optical or laser mice.
Of course, nearly gone are the days of the trackball mouse—the mouse that uses a rolling ball underneath which electronically, through sensors, tell were the cursor should be. This should not be confused with the standard trackball—the one where a big rolling ball is situated at the top to provide extra, more accurate movement.
Today, lasers are used to track the movement of the curser. An optical beam is usually directed downwards (on the mouse pad) which tracks minute movements from the user. This is of course more better because there are fewer moving parts—dirt buildup is a common problem for trackballs—but a good surface is needed so that the light does not bounce around providing real time feedback to the user.
A typical, standard mouse pad measures within the vicinity of 8 inches by 6 inches (there is no standard measurement). Large, oversized mouse pads, at least from what we have seen, can go up to 17 inches by 13 inches. Those are nearly 4 standard mouse pads placed together in a 2 by 2 formation.
Most of the oversized pads are sold by computer gaming companies or those providing gaming gears. Naturally, it is quite irritating to play games that need pinpoint accuracy only to have your mouse fall of the edges of pads every so often.
